Laser Vision Correction (LASIK)

What is LASIK?

LASIK (Laser-In-Situ Keratomileusis) is a state of the art procedure in which an excimer laser is used to reshape the cornea to correct many types of refractive errors. Most individuals who are nearsighted, or have astigmatism, and many farsighted individuals, can have their vision corrected with LASIK. LASIK, together with PRK, is considered by nearly all experienced refractive surgeons in the world to be the procedure of choice in correcting vision errors.

What are the advantages of LASIK?

LASIK offers many advantages over other types of refractive surgery (such as RK) because it is performed under a protective layer covering the cornea. Because of this, people who have LASIK can expect faster recovery of vision, less postoperative discomfort and faster healing.

LASIK treats a high range of vision errors, and most individuals can have both eyes done on the same day, making it possible for them to return to work in a day or two.

How is the procedure performed?

The eye is numbed using anesthetic eye drops only. A device called a speculum helps you keep your eye open to prevent blinking. Next, a protective corneal flap is created using an instrument called a microkeratome. The flap is gently folded back, and the reshaping of the cornea is done with the excimer laser. Following this, the flap is repositioned where it dries and bonds without stitches. Antibiotic drops are used for several days and you will be asked to sleep with a clear shield over your eye for the first five nights to protect the cornea.

What sort of vision can I expect after LASIK?

The decision to have LASIK is an important and personal decision. Most patients are able to pass the vision requirement for driving without glasses after LASIK, and the overwhelming majority of patients see 20/20 to 20/40 following this procedure. However, it is important for you to have realistic expectations. Our goal is patient satisfaction, while maintaining the safety of your eyes.
